There is a great deal of shame, fear, and rejection that goes on in anyone’s mind when they face a medical challenge. There are also stigmas and in some cases even embarrassment. For all these reasons and more, people living with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis or ANY auto immune medical condition, should want to share their stories.
Tell the world exactly what you are going through…don’t be ashamed or afraid or even embarrassed. You should never feel like you have to hide in the shadows, when you belong in the spotlight…
Oftentimes the shame, fear, rejection, and embarrassment may feel like physical or emotional barriers, but those feelings are of no value to the true story of your medical journey, or how you arrived on this auto immune island.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to predict the weather before it actually happens? We are talking about not even needing a weather app, news channel, or weather forecast website…..Imagine you could just feel the weather creeping up on you inside your body, your joints, your skin, and even in your head a bit….
For someone who suffers from a chronic illness or an autoimmune condition such as arthritis or psoriatic arthritis which is surrounded by inflammation, you can feel ALL changes in the weather regardless of the time of day or even the season.
Here’s an example: Today in NY it is pouring….not like a half inch of rain pouring, but several inches of rain pouring…and I could feel this rain coming on Friday. I was in agony almost from my head to my toe! My knees usually feel it first and then it spreads everywhere. Sometimes my knees get really hot, swollen, achy, or feel like someone is stabbing them directly in the knee cap! It is a very strange sensation but once I feel it, I know the rain is coming.
If you suffer from a chronic illness or autoimmune condition, I am sure you can relate! This pain can be dull to sharp…achy…sore…hot…cold…it varies based on the humidity levels, or the air pressure systems. Sometimes you can even get headaches as part of this lovely weather report…I call those parting gifts, from being a human barometer!!
Some days, I can feel the rain hours before and I will know how much rain is coming. I can even tell almost up to the hour when it will start to rain or even snow! People look at me crazy sometimes, or they are really impressed. They are astonished sometimes and in utter and total disbelief that I can predict the weather that accurately…who knows…maybe I missed my calling?
When seasons change, so do symptoms of my PSA. Certain months of the year are very painful, and some months I barely feel anything at all. Symptoms can be brought on by just about any atmospheric, environmental, and seasonal changes. Be alert and know your body. As soon as you notice something is different, or you feel pain in a place you never felt before you know there could be changes that are completely out of your control!! Lifestyle changes can also cause this, but the weather really has a huge impact!
So really, who needs a weather app, or the weather channel, or a weather website? The answer is you really don’t….especially when your own body can predict the weather more accurately than the news can!
If you aren’t familiar with the term “flare” BOY….you are in for a treat! A flare simply means your bodies immune system is going into hyperdrive….literally. A flare can be brought on by so many different things. A flare can be brought on by stress, certain foods, lack of sleep, a new medication, an injury, a trauma, an allergic reaction, the environment, allergies, change of season, anxiety, oh the list is endless but I am sure you get the idea! A flare can last anywhere from several days to weeks, to even months. Depending on the severity of the flare-up, your body will be impacted in several ways.
If you are experiencing a Psoriatic Arthritis flare up, the first indicator is usually your skin. My psoriasis will just come out of nowhere….show up on my elbows, legs, stomach, sometimes my face or scalp and even my hands. After my skin gets really red, itchy, flaky, and patch filled with lovely psoriasis..then I can usually expect joint pain. Sometimes the joint pain happens first…or vice versa. You never really know what’s going to happen or when and where….that’s what is so much fun about having an auto-immune condition! It is a pot-luck, unpredictable journey! There are several steps you need to take if you feel a flare coming on before it is too late!
As soon as you feel the symptoms of a flare or see any (fresh psoriasis sprung out of nowhere), you must seek medical attention right away. You should make an appointment with your rheumatologist so they can treat you. If you can’t make it to the doctor right away…start taking your usual prednisone taper…I think anyone who has PsA knows the magical prednisone taper. We all hate prednisone, but we know it gets the job done…especially during an epic flare up.
I hope you never have to experience a really bad flare up during your spoonie lifetime, but if you do, be prepared! Once you have one….you will know exactly what to do the next time one pops up!
Living with chronic pain… or any auto immune illness really feels like you’re trying to get comfortable on a cactus sofa… who else can relate to this? You are in a constant battle with yourself to get comfortable and find a happy medium. A great harmony and balance that works best for you and your chronic pain. Some days may be worse than others… and you choose to celebrate those almighty great days. Don’t lose hope during those bad days… they just make you stronger and make you realize how valuable it is to embrace the pain you’re in. Embrace it for all that it’s worth! Learn to stop whatever it is that you’re doing and just DO NOTHING. Lay down, sit down, close your eyes… take a minute… take 5 minutes… heck take an hour. Just take as long as you need. Because we all know that prickly cactus sofa awaits…. it is always there…. it never leaves… you just learn to deal with it.
